The Intensive Reading subject is taught using the Before, While, and After Reading approach. Before Reading is used to raise interest and excitement of the student by describing book covers, making predictions and developing background knowledge. While Reading involves controlled reading with the teacher in order to develop accurate pronunciation, fluency and a strong understanding of the story. After Reading is used to check that the students understood the story well and are able to summarize and discuss the contents through presentations and written reports.
WRITING
Writing follows a natural progression at Reading Q.
- White Level – Students copy story sentences and unscramble basic sentence forms. All writing is controlled by the teacher.
- Yellow Level – Book report writing is used to help students fill a page. Yellow levels learn simple summary skills along with present and past tenses while reporting under the guidance of our teachers.
- Green Level – Green Level students begin paragraph writing. They are required to rainstorm a topic, outline their ideas and write a full paragraph based on the teacher’s comments and feedback. Unlike lower level, Green Level students do not have story materials to rely on and get details from.
- Blue Level – Students at Blue Level begin writing 4 paragraph essays. Essay structure is key at this level as students learn how to form introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions.
- Red and Black Levels – The requirements at these levels are 5 paragraph essays. Students have a clear understanding of essay structure, so the focus is on content development and the cohesion of ideas.
